WHAT IS FINISHED?

IT IS FINISHED

John 19:30, “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished:
and he bowed his head, an gave up the ghost.”
May I ask this question? What is finished? What was finished? Once a year on the Day of Atonement the 10th day of the 7th
month and for some the 1st month, which would correspond with our
month of October, on that 10th day of the month the High Priest
would take the blood of the innocent substituted that was offered and he alone
once a year would take that blood inside the Tabernacle.

He would walk through
the outer veil and pass the Candlestick on his left. Then pass the Table of
Shewbread on his right, to his right was the Altar of Incense, and then he
would approach the second veil called the Inner Veil. He would then walk inside
the Inner Veil. Any of the priests could come into the outer room of the
Tabernacle where the Golden Candlestick, the Table of Shewbread, and the Altar
of Incense abode but only the High Priest could walk through the second veil
into the Holy of Holies.

The Holy of Holies was a little
15’ wide, 15’ long, and 15’ high. In that room was called the Ark of the
Covenant. This was a little piece of furniture about the size of a Lord’s
Supper table. The top of it was pure gold. It was called the Mercy Seat and the
High Priest would take the innocent blood of the innocent substitute through
the outer veil and through the inner veil into the Holy of Holies where he
would sprinkle the innocent blood upon the Mercy Seat.

Then he would walk out
of the Holy of Holies and out of the Tabernacle itself to the awaiting public
where he would lift up his hands and with a loud voice shout “It is finished!”
Letting the people know that once again the sins were atoned for symbolically
on that Day of Atonement.

Our Lord Jesus Christ was both
the Lamb and the High Priest. As our Lamb He paid the penalty while as our High
Priest He sprinkled His own blood on the Mercy Seat in Heaven and then He
intercedes for the redeemed in Heaven continually.

On the cross our High Priest after
He had paid the penalty for our sins shouted, “It is finished!” Now I ask the
question what was finished?

HIS SUFFERING WAS FINISHED
The Scripture tells us He endured
the cross and the joy that was set before Him was the resurrection but between
Him and the resurrection was the suffering of Calvary. The Bible says Jesus
endured the cross then He cried, “It is finished!”

Jesus will feel no more the cat
of nine tails with the lashing and tearing of His flesh. He will feel no more
the nails in His hands and His feet. He will feel no more the spear that
pierced neither His side nor the crown of thorns that invaded His brow. He will
never be despised and rejected by men again. No synagogue will cast Him out
again. No judge will wrongly try Him. No angry mob will scream, “Crucify Him,
Crucify Him” and “Release Barabbas, Release Barabbas!”

No more lonely nights on the
Mount of Olives as he watched the foxes scurry to their holes, the birds fly to
their nests, and the Son of man had no place to lay His head. There will be no
more rocks for pillows. No more kiss of betrayal from one of the twelve. No
more Scribes and Pharisees to attack Him verbally.

Never again will He cry, “My
God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Never again will He look up ad see the
back of His Father as His Father turned away from His own Son. Never again
would He dip His own soul into Hell to be payment for the sins of the world.
Never again will He be acquainted with grief for He will forever be praised by
saints, served by angels, and adored by His Father. IT IS FINISHED! What does
it mean?

SINS’ PAYMENT WAS FINISHED

Jesus paid it all and all to Him
I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain, but he washed it white as snow. The old
account was settled long ago on the cross of Calvary.

The first person that went to
Heaven in the Bible was Able. Can you imagine how lonely Able must have been?
Able had been in Paradise for 4,000 years. Now it was not the place we call
Heaven today. It was a place where the saved of the Old Testament waited for
the sin debt to be paid on Calvary.

Ephesians chapter 4 says that
Jesus first descended into the lower parts and led captivity captive. He went
into Abraham’s bosom, or Paradise, and took the Old Testament saints and
brought them and Paradise to Heaven.

Able along with Moses, Abraham,
Joshua, Isaac, Jacob, David, Noah, and all the saints of the Old Testament
before Calvary for 4,000 years had been in Paradise waiting for this day so
they could go to Heaven.

When Jesus paid the penalty think
of the joy when He descended to Paradise and said come on follow Me we are
going to Heaven now for the price is paid! The lay away plan is paid in full.
IT IS FINISHED! What did it mean?

HIS DREAD IS FINISHED
Every 12-year-old Jewish boy was
taken aside and old by his parents what his vocation was going to be for the
rest of his life. Each 12-year-old boy began the training for his life’s work
at that moment.

At the age of 12 Jesus was in
Jerusalem and His mom and step dad missed Him while in fact after traveling
several days. When returned to Jerusalem they found Jesus in the Temple asking
questions and answering questions. Mary said Jesus your father and I have
sought thee sorrowing. Jesus replied Joseph is not my father. Then He said to
them, “What know ye not that I must be about my Father’s business.”

Mary was Jesus’ mother but Joseph
was not Jesus’ father for our Heavenly Father was the Father of Jesus. Thus, I believe the Heavenly Father had taken his 12-year-old Son and explained to Him what His
life’s work was and what His business was to be. What was His business?

Luke 19:10, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

He came to go to Calvary. Christ
Jesus has come to earth to save sinners! Up until this time Jesus had not known
what His purpose was so His Father had a talk with His Son. He explained to
Jesus that He was perfect and that His blood was perfect blood running in His
veins. He explained that He would go to Calvary for He was as much God as
though He were not man and was as much man as if He were not God. As God He
lived a perfect life but as man He was tempted in all points like all men are
tempted.

However, at age 12 I believe Jesus knew all
of a sudden that He was going to go to Calvary. We are talking about a junior
high boy, a boy in the seventh or eighth grade. Get the picture? Here is a
12-year-old boy who learned all of a sudden that He was going to go to Calvary
and die a horrible death.

Imagine what must have gone
through His mind when He read Isaiah chapter 53. Picture this with me as he
reads this over and over again at ages 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, etc. Can you
begin to fathom what He thought? Think about it! A 12, 13, 14, 15 year old boy
who every time He attended church read about the coming Messiah and He knew He
was that Messiah. He would read of the suffering of the Messiah knowing full
well that it was speaking of Himself for He was the Messiah.

He read how the Messiah was going
to be crucified and have to deep His soul into Hell! Can you comprehend how He
felt? When He read Daniel 9:26, “The Messiah would be cut off” contemplate how
he felt knowing that He was that Messiah. The shadow of Calvary loomed over Him
all during His earthly life. When He read, “He was bruised for our iniquity” He
knew that was His body that would be bruised. When He read “By His stripes we
are healed” He knew that it was His body that the cat of nine tails would be
ripping His flesh for 39 times. This is a 12, 13, 14, 15, etc, young boy. The
shadow of suffering was hanging over His head!

When Psalm 22:1 was taught He
knew it was Him of whom it was speaking when it said, “My God, my God, why hast
thou forsaken me?”
Jesus knew it was Him of whom it was speaking. Can you grasp
the dread that He as a little boy endured? Can you decipher the fear that
attacked Him as a teenage boy for He was in flesh?

When they came to Numbers
chapter 21 at church they read about the serpent of brass that was lifted high
so that those who had been bitten by a deadly serpent could look up at that
brass pole and live. Jesus knew full well that the serpent on that pole was a
picture of Him and the one-day He would be lifted up high hanging on a cross of
shame to die.

At 12 He knew he would be
rejected, tried, convicted, beaten, and end up on a cross at Calvary. Every
pigeon that He saw offered reminded Him that the pigeon was only a type of Him.
Every lamb he saw offered as an innocent sacrifice He knew that lamb was only a
symbol of Him along with every bullock, every turtledove, and every sacrificed
ram.

Then in they would come to Isaiah
52:14 and at age 12 He would read that His visage would be so marred that no
one would be able to determine that He was human. Mind you all of this was
happening at ages 12, 13, 14, 15, etc. He would look at His smooth teenage
hands and realize that one-day nails would be driven into those hands. He would
look at those teenage feet and realize one-day nails would be in those teenage
feet.

Jesus did not start suffering on
Calvary for He started suffering at age 12 and for 21 years dreaded Calvary. IT
IS FINISHED! What was finished?

THE HURT OF THE HEAVENLY FATHER WAS FINISHED
Back in the fore-ordinate counsel
of eternity past God looked down and realized that man was going to sin after
He created man. God in His foreknowledge made a plan where by man would not
have to go to Hell. Jesus volunteered to go to Calvary to be the acceptable
payment for the sins of man and anyone who would trust Him as payment for their
sins could come back to the Father.

Revelation 13:8, “And all that dwell upon the earth shall
worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain
from the foundation of the world.”

Hebrews 9:26, “For then must he often have suffered since
the foundation of the world…”

I Peter 1:20, “Who verily was foreordained before the
foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.”

John 17:24, “Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me
where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou
lovedst me before the foundation of the world.”

Can you envision what it would
have been like if the dear parents of one of our staff members Bill Nelson who
was killed in a tragic automobile accident if they had know all those years
what would happen to their precious son. That is exactly what it was like for
God the Father before the foundation of the world.

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

When did God give His only
begotten Son? In eternity past and God had to live with that hurt for all of
those thousands of years. As time passed the pain became greater and greater
and greater until He had to turn His back on His own Son. That’s how much God
loves you! God loves man so much that God turned His back on His own Son.

God in His mind watched Judas
betray His own Son, the betrayal kiss on Jesus’ brow, the soldiers arrest Him,
being sent to one priest then to another, then on to Pilate, and over and over
and over again! God in His mind watched them beat His Son over and over and
over again.

God in His mind watched them
drive those nails into His hands and felt it not just one time but in His mind
over and over and over again for thousands of years! When Jesus cried, “IT IS
FINISHED!” What was finished?

·
His
suffering was finished
·
His
payment for sin was finished
·
His dread
for Calvary was finished
·
The hurt
of God the Father was finished

In 72 hours Jesus will rise from
the dead and the Heavenly father will be re-united with His Son whose coming
home! Never again to be beaten, spit upon, rejected, crucified, or mocked. God
the Father never again will have to feel the pain of His Son’s suffering on the
cross!
