YOGI IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE BASEBALL PLAYERS AND HIS YOGI-ISMS STILL MAKE ME LAUGH

Yogi Berra turns 90 today

I have several favorites in the sport of baseball. Some you would automatically recognize and others you would have to be from a certain region of the country to know. Yogi Berra is one of those Hall Of Fame American icons that brought not only joy on the field, but in his famous “Yogi-isms.”I loved the interviews he gave and his bland manner. He was like a straight man in a comedy routine. He was one of those rare Americans who saw the good with ease.

In 19 big-league seasons he pounded out 2,150  hits which included 358 home runs. This was good enough to bring about an induction into the baseball Hall Of Fame.

He was known as a bad ball hitter.  One time his manager Bucky Harris scolded Yogi before going to the plate by exhorting to “Make the pitcher come in with the ball…THINK, THINK.” Berra stepped into the batter’s box and quickly took three strikes He walked back to the dug out where he told Bucky, “How can anybody think and hit at the same time?” Thus began the constant flow of “Yogi-isms.”

I have listed those for you.  I hope they bring as much laughter and joy to you as they still do to me.

Yogi-isms

“It ain’t over until its over”

“It’s deja vu all over again”

“When you come to a fork in the road, take it”

During a draught in CA a friend said to Yogi, “You can’t sprinkle your lawn now.” Yogi replied, “John, I don’t, It comes on automatically.”

When asked about his Yogi-isms he smiled and said, “I’m just saying what I saw.”

“Baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical.”

A reporter said in and article he was ugly and he replied, “I never say anyone hit with his face.”

His manager exhorted him one time by telling him when he got to the plate “…Think. Think.” After taking 3 strikes he went back to the bench and told his manager, “How can anybody think and hit at the same time?”

Yogi told Garagiola when he arrived for an appointment, “That’s the earliest you’ve ever been late.”

About deflate gate he tweeted, “If you’re going to cheat, it’s better if you don’t get caught.”

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.
‘Little League baseball is a very good thing because it keeps the parents off the streets.

I never blame myself when I’m not hitting. I just blame the bat and if it keeps up, I change bats.

I never said most of the things I said.

You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you are going, because you might not get there.

The future ain’t what it used to be.

Congratulations. I knew the record would stand until it was broken.

You should always go to other people’s funerals; otherwise, they won’t come to yours.

Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.

I just want to thank everyone who made this day necessary.

He hits from both sides of the plate. He’s amphibious.

I wish I had an answer to that because I’m tired of answering that question.

Half the lies they tell about me aren’t true.

A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.
