Heaven’s Music

“And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judges the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand. And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth” (Revelation 19:1-6)

Music is a vital part of the people of God, local New Testament church, and Heaven. The two churches that God allowed me to pastor I made much of the music without it ever taking the place of preaching. We had special music programs but they never took the place or pre-empted preaching of the Word of God. The blessing of the right type of music is an integral part of the work of God.

One entire book of the Bible is composed of 150 different songs; singing almost always followed a victory in the Scriptures. Moses sang a song of redemption after crossing the mighty waters of the Red Sea. At the defeat of Sisera they sang a song of victory. Returning from Babylonian captivity they sang a song of victory.

Every revival that is mentioned in the Scriptures all of them had included in them music. In the upper room our Lord had washed the feet of the Disciples and after He had quoted to these John chapter 14 and the Bible says after they had taken the Last Supper (Matthew 26:30) “And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives…”

Just as one entire book of the Bible is composed of songs likewise one entire book of the Bible is a song The Song Of Solomon. When the children of God are commanded in Ephesians 5:18-19 to be filled with the Holy Spirit the Scripture immediately starts speaking about spiritual songs and hymns because no one is ever filled with the Spirit of God that does not have a song in his or her heart and on their lips.

It always bothered me when I pastored when some in the congregation did not sing during the congregational song service. I would find myself worrying about them. Joy is always surrounded by music and spirit fulness is also surrounded by music. The Jews were known as a singing people. In fact when they went into captivity for 70 years the Babylonian people wanted to hear them sing and the Bible says, (Psalm 137:3)“They required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.” The Jews replied, (Psalm 137:4)“How can we sing the LORD’S song in a strange land?”

The Jews were a singing people. The singing of Psalm 113-118 concluded the Passover and the Feast of Pentecost and no doubt that is probably what they sang when Jesus instituted the Last Supper.

The themes of these Psalms in song were the coming out of Egypt, the division of the Red Sea, the parting of the waters, and the resurrection from the dead. It’s not surprising that music should have a great part in our lives here on earth and in Heaven.

If you do not sing the congregational songs in church down here on earth what will you do when you finally do arrive in Heaven? I wonder sometimes how much some of God’s people will sing in Heaven? Many sit through the invitation time, or the altar call, with a poker look on their faces while people are being birthed into the Kingdom of God with the second birth. Many stand there through the invitation to come to Jesus Christ for payment of their sins and look so bored.

I’ve noticed something in my forty-seven years of ministry and thirty-three years of pastoring that those who do not sing do not say amen, come to the altar, they leave early, go to the nursery before the service is over, stay in the hallway talking to others, hardly ever smile when others smile, rarely show any facial expression, rarely laugh when others laugh, do not come back for the Sunday night service, talk during the altar call, never nod their heads up and down during the sermon, and have never shouted amen!

In Zephaniah 3:17 Jesus Himself will sing in Heaven. It says He will joy over us with singing. In II Corinthians chapter 12 when the Apostle Paul was caught up into the third heaven the Bible says he came back and did not tell us a thing about what he saw and it does not say that he saw things unlawful to utter it says he HEARD things unlawful to utter. It only speaks of what he HEARD!

In Revelation 5:9 it says, “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;” There will be congregational singing in Heaven and it says every Christian who has ever lived will join in that congregational singing!

Why a new song, maybe because most of the old songs will not pertain to the redeemed there? We will not be able to sing, “In the mansions bright and blessed he has prepared us a place.” It’ll be too late we will already be there in those mansions! We cannot sing, “On Jordan’s stormy banks I stand and cast a wishful eye to Canaan’s fair and happy land where my possessions lie” because we will already be there. We cannot sing “It will be worth it all when we see Jesus” because we will be looking at Him all the time. We cannot sing, “Yield not to temptation” because there will not be any temptation there. We cannot sing “There is a land that is fairer than day and by faith we can see it a far” because we will be right there in Heaven. We cannot sing “In the sweet by and by” because we will have to sing a new song of  “In the sweet now and now” because we will be in Heaven. We cannot sing “Some golden daybreak Jesus will come” because He will have already come and we will be in His presence. We cannot sing “And I shall see him face to face and tell the story saved by grace” because we will se Him everyday face to face. We cannot sing, “Oh, I want to see Him look upon his face. Oh I want to thank him for his saving grace” because we will be seeing Him face to face. We cannot sing, “Oh, they tell me of a land of the unclouded day” because we will be in the land of the unclouded day. We cannot sing, “Sweet hour of prayer. Sweet hour of prayer that calls me from a world of care” because we will not have to pray there because we will can just go see Him and talk to Him face to face. We cannot sing “From Mount Pisgah’s lofty height I view my home and take my flight. This robe of flesh I’ll drop and rise to seize the everlasting prize and shout while passing through the air. Farewell, farewell sweet hour of prayer” because we will be there in our glorified bodies.

The Scripture tells us that every child of God who has every lived will be singing together in congregational singing new song all at one time. Maybe we will sing, “We’ve heard the joyful sound Jesus saves! Jesus saves!” Maybe billions and billions of us will sing, “All hail the power of Jesus’ name. Let angels prostrate fall bring forth the royal diadem and crown him as Lord of all.” I can see us all joining together and sing the songs of God in Heaven.

“And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before they four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth” (Revelation 14:3).

The Scripture explains that there will be 144,000 who will be uniquely saved out of the seven-year tribulation period and the Bible says they will sing a new song also.

“And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are thy works, Lord God Almighty: just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints” (Revelation 15:3).

God says that the redeemed will sing the song of Moses. This song was given in Exodus chapter 15 after the Israelites crossed the Red Sea on dry ground. The Scripture says that the saved will sing the song of the Lamb and that song of the Lamb is what they sang at the end of the Passover and Pentecost feast (Psalm 113-118).

“And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing” (Revelation 5:11).

There will be an angelic choir of 104 million angels who will all sing at one time. The congregational singing will be billions and billions and billions of believers plus the choir of 104 million angels! Wow!

What is the throne of Heaven singing? (Revelation 19:1-6)
